Course content and focus areas

The master's degree program, "Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health," focuses on teaching and researching biodiversity, ecology, ecotoxicology, and the evolution of animals, plants, and fungi in the context of global change. In addition to teaching basic and current scientific knowledge, the program provides training in a variety of practical field and laboratory skills. Therefore, the program is strongly research-focused. The curriculum includes genetic diversity, biodiversity, nature conservation, interactions, multiple stressors, biocenoses, and ecosystems.

The program aims to foster an understanding of the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics in maintaining ecosystem functions and services for humans. Biodiversity is addressed in all its facets, from genes to species diversity, evolution, and ecosystems. Ecosystem health includes the effects of stressors, such as climate change, pathogens, and chemical pollution, on organisms and ecosystems. Our evidence-based research promotes the transition to a sustainable society. The degree program is closely linked to the Sustainability & Biodiversity profile area at Goethe University.

Students can concentrate on one subject area within the program. The chosen subject focus area is noted on the master's degree certificate. Possible areas of specialization are:

  • Ecology
  • Ecotoxicology
  • Evolutionary Biology
  • Organismal diversity
  • Mycology
