Course content and focus areas
Earth sciences study temporal and spatial changes within the Earth system, linking observations, measurements, and modeling to the properties and material composition of geomatter. These dimensions range from the smallest temporal and spatial units—such as atmospheric discharges or crystal structures—to the age of the Earth and global phenomena like plate tectonics and mantle convection. The complex interactions involved call for close collaboration across a wide range of disciplines.
At the Faculty of Earth Sciences/Geography at Goethe University Frankfurt, these disciplines include meteorology, physical geography, geology, palaeontology, mineralogy, and geophysics. Additionally, there is a strong connection with the Senckenberg Museum and the Department of Applied Geosciences at TU Darmstadt. Courses taught by members of these institutions are integrated into the program. The master’s program in geosciences focuses on the classical earth sciences, with education provided in geology, palaeontology, geophysics, and mineralogy.
The master’s program in geosciences can be pursued after completing the undergraduate program in geosciences. The program offers specialization in the fields of geology, geophysics, mineralogy, or palaeontology.
