Meteorology is, among other things, the science of weather and climate—but it’s so much more! It is a discipline within the earth sciences rooted in physics, using experimental-empirical and theoretical methods to study the atmosphere. In addition to its connections to physics and mathematics, it also intersects with chemistry, oceanography, hydrology, and geography.

Structure and content

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Meteorology prepares students for a professional career or further studies (master’s degree program). A solid understanding of physics and mathematics is essential for the course in meteorology. During the first semesters, coursework primarily focuses on these two subjects. In later semesters, the emphasis shifts to meteorology-specific courses.

The compulsory elective component (WP) allows for some flexibility in shaping the content of the degree program. In the Meteorological Specialization Module, students can select courses from specialized areas of meteorology. Knowledge in physics can be further deepened through the selection of modules within the compulsory elective component for physics. Depending on individual interests, some physics modules can also be replaced by a minor, such as chemistry, earth sciences, mathematics, or economics.

The degree program concludes in the sixth semester with the bachelor’s thesis, which provides an opportunity to establish initial connections to current research. The bachelor’s thesis can be completed within any research group at the institute or at an external facility (e.g., the German Weather Service).
