Course content and focus areas
This master's program provides an academically rigorous education in linguistics, language sociology, and linguistic action in Africa and the African diaspora. In addition to learning an African language (Fula, Hausa, or Swahili), the “Language in Context” and “Guided Literature Study” modules provide expertise in language and cultural studies.
The program includes two concentrations: the non-consecutive track, "African Discourses — Language and Cultural Contexts," and the consecutive track, "African Studies — Social and Historical Contexts," which builds on prior linguistic education. Students choose one of these concentrations as their focus depending on their previous studies and specific qualification goals.
Through the master's thesis, students in both focus areas are prepared for advanced academic work or a doctorate in African Studies, depending on the individual structure of their studies, or for professional careers related to Africa.
