Exchange program with partner universities in Japan

Frankfurt students of Goethe University have the opportunity to study at one of its Japanese partner institutions Doshisha University in Kyoto and the  University of Osaka, and NEW since 2025/26: Dokkyo UniversityHitotsubashi UniversitySophia University and  Yokohama City University (in the Greater Tokyo Area) as exchange students for one or two semesters. Classes are offered in Japanese and English. 


When to apply? 
 deadline: Tuesday, 3 February 2026 
(for a stay abroad during the acadamic year 2026/27)

Partner universities and number of possible exchange students:

  • Dokkyo University: 2-3 exchange students per semester 
  • Doshisha University
    • max. 2 exchange students per semester (fall / spring) - tuition fee waiver 
    • 2-3 students in the "fee-based program" (tuition fee approx. €2.700 / semester); students who apply for the exchange but do not get nominated will have the opportunity to apply for the fee-based program
  • Hitotsubashi University: 2 exchange students for one semester each
  • Sophia University:  
    • regular exchange: 2 exchange students for one semester (expected to be available only in the summer semester) 
    • German-Japanese Exchange Program: 4 exchange students for one semester (fall / spring)

Dokkyo University

Dokkyo University

Japanese A2 required!

Dokkyo University is located in Soka, Saitama, a suburban town situated in the Greater Tokyo area. The name “Dokkyo" is a coinage derived from the Japanese words “Doitsu-gaku" (German studies) and “Kyokai" (association). Founded in 1883 as an independent institute dedicated to studying the German language and culture, Dokkyo played a pioneering role in Japan's modernization through Western models

  • all exchange students must enroll in the university's Japanese language program (comprehensive program divided into six levels, from upper elementary to advanced)
  • students of all Japanese levels may take regular undergraduate courses (after approval of course instructors)
  • Basic Japanese (A2 / JLPT N5*) is a prerequisite to join the program (absolute beginners may not apply)

Exchange students are required to live in off-campus university housing. They share 3 bedroom apartment with two other students.


 *It is NOT necessary to take the official language tests (JLPT), the language certificate issued by the department of Japanese Studies is sufficient.


Doshisha University (Kyoto)

Doshisha University, one of the oldest private institutions of higher learning in Japan, is said to be one of the most prestigious universities in Japan today. Students of Goethe University can apply to study at Doshisha University for the Japanese Language and Culture module (Nichibun) or the Global Education Module (GME) at the Center of Global Education and Japanese Studies for one semester:

Japanese Language and Culture Module (Nichibun): 

  • good knowledge of Japanese required! (at least one year's experience of Japanese language study at college level prior to enrollment at Doshisha University) 
  • for students of Japanese Studies and other majors related to Japan with good knowledge of Japanese 
  • a variety of attractive subjects for international students studying at Doshisha University, including Japanese language classes, lecture courses in Japanese Studies and International Studies as well as classes on economy, world history and journalism 
  • classes are held in Japanese and English 
  • only undergraduate classes are offered which may also be taken by graduate students (transfer of credits must be confirmed by home institute/department) 
  • exchange students enrolled for the Japanese Language and Culture module may also take classes of the Global Education Module (see below) 

Global Education Module: 

  • English B2 required!
  • for students of other majors interested in Japan with no or little knowledge of Japanese 
  • liberal arts courses taught solely in English to international students and Japanese students to study together and foster a better understanding of Japan in a global context. This Module's curriculum is designed to provide in-depth learning opportunities in a wide range of academic fields ranging from the humanities and social sciences to the natural and human sciences. 
  • exchange students may take Japanese language classes 
  • exchange students enrolled for the Global Education Module may also enroll in courses offered by The Institute for the Liberal Arts (ILA) after consideration (requests to register for ILA courses may not always be granted as many ILA courses have limited space for enrollment)
  • GEM students are also permitted to enroll in some courses offered by Japanese Language and Culture Module (Nichibun) in accordance with their Japanese proficiency

Hitotsubashi University

Hitotsubashi

Hitotsubashi University requires an average grade of 2,3 at the time of the application (GPA 2,7 on a scale to 4). 


Hitotsubashi University is situated in Tokyo and has a student body of approx. 6,200 students (900 of which are internationals) and about 515 faculty members. 


Exchange students may study at the following faculties/schools at Hitotsubashi University:

  • Undergraduate: Commerce and Management, Economics, Law, Social Sciences and Social Data Science
  • Graduate: Hitotsubashi University Business School (HUB), Graduate School of Economics, Graduate School of Law, Graduate School of Social Sciences, Graduate School of Language and Society, Graduate School of Social Data Science and School of International and Public Policy 
  • AND they may take Japanese classes on several levels. 
  • English or Japanese B2 required

Over the years, it has gradually expanded the scope of its research and teaching to cover all fields of the social sciences, and today enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the top research universities in Japan. In 2019, it was accredited as one of the few outstanding Designated National Universities – the only one specializing in the social sciences.


Hitotsubashi has long placed seminars at the core of its curricula. While lectures feature prominently in Japanese tertiary education, all Hitotsubashi students are required to participate in small-group seminars as well. Such a system not only cultivates their individual abilities and personalities, but also provides them with the opportunity to develop close and often lifelong relationships with their fellow students and supervising professors. The seminars also facilitate a high level of study and research and underpin the creative and liberal character for which the University is famous."

Sophia University

Sophia University

Sophia University requires exchange students to have an average grade of 2.0 (GPA of 2.0 on a scale to 4.0). 

MA students in their 1st semester: Grades received at Goethe University are required from nominated students at time of application at Sophia University (April). If you will not be able submit grades received from Goethe University by April (average at least 2,0), please do not apply. Sophia University will not make any exceptions.


Sophia University is located in western Tokyo, just a 5-minute train ride from Shinjuku. Sophia University has around 15,000 students, of whom approximately 1,500-2,000 come from 80 different countries.


Exchange students at Sophia University have two options:

German-Japanese exchange program:

  • undergraduate only
  • Japanese language proficiency at least A2

Regular exchange:

  • undergraduate/graduate
  • GPA 3.0/4.0 (German grade 2,0)

Restrictions on course selection: “FLA core programs, FST laboratory classes, foreign language courses (except Japanese language), seminars, and Studies in Christian Humanism courses are NOT open to exchange students."



The University of Osaka (former Osaka University)

The University of Osaka offers international exchange students a variety of study abroad options:

iExPO (Immersion Exchange Program Osaka):

  • high level of fluency in Japanese (JLPT N1 or N2) required depending on the classes they would like to take 
  • undergraduate and graduate classes from various courses and departments at Osaka University 
  • or research under the guidance of teachers 
  • JLPT N1 or N2 is required with application (only very few test dates and locations in Germany per year!)

OUSSEP (Osaka University Short-Term Student Exchange Program):

  • program (1-2 semester) designed for students in the 3rd or 4th year 
  • special academic lectures taught in English called "International Exchange Subjects"  
  • no Japanese required

FrontierLab:  

  • created for international students to conduct advanced thematic studies and achieve results under the guidance of teachers and acquire skills necessary for continuing research
  • for students of natural sciences  
  • participants study mainly research themes provided by the laboratory
  • participants may also take international exchange subjects and Japanese language courses and other related subjects 
  • undergraduate students: one or two semesters
  • graduate students: three to twelve months (starting date in April or September)

Yokohama City University

YCU
Yokohama City University is situated in Yokohama City in the Greater Tokyo area. It is a relatively small university (approx. 5,000 students) with five undergraduate and six graduate schools.   


  • Japanese and/or English B2 required (language certificate issued by a lecturer is sufficient)
  • Regardless of the year of study at the home institution (i.e. undergraduate or postgraduate), all the incoming exchange students will be technically (on paper) placed as the second year of each school's undergraduate program. 
  • Exchange students may take classes taught in Japanese and/or English. 
  • Exchange students may take classes at the
    • School of International Liberal Arts
    • School of Economics and Business Administration 
    • School of Science 
    • School of Data Science
  • Japanese language classes are available on all levels. 

general application requirements (for all our Direktaustauschprogramme):

  • applicants must be enrolled at Goethe University
  • applicants must be at least in their 2nd semester (BA), MA students may apply during their 1st semester
  • All majors may apply, there may be some restrictions regarding the available courses: students of medicine and law may apply but will not be able to take classes from their major at the host institution; restrictions regarding courses see first tab "host institution(s)"
  • Good academic standing 
  • Good language proficiency (at least B1, if not stated otherwise) - language certificates are valid for 2 years only!
  • good knowledge of  current and historic political and cultural affairs of host country and Germany
  • good knowledge of the host institution, available classes and a detailed study plan specific to the respective host institution(s)
  • It is expected of exchange students to return to Goethe-University after their study abroad period and continue and finish their studies here. 
  • Students who do not have a German Abitur or other German Hochschulzugangsberechtigung and who are enrolled in an English degree have to submit proof of German proficiency (preferably at least B1)
  • Applicants are expected to be able to take on an ambassador role for Goethe University and Frankfurt

LANGUAGE CERTIFICATE JAPANESE:

  • Students of Japanese Studies: successful completion of language course at the institute (Modul Modernes Japanisch III = A2; Modul Modernes Japanisch IV = B1) 
  • Students of other majors: 
    • please contact language teachers Ms. Schruff and Ms. Nakano-Hofmann at the Institute of Japanese Studies for an appointment for a language assessment: nihongo@em.uni-frankfurt.de 
    • OR if you have a different proof of your language proficiency, please send it to us in advance so that we can determine whether we can accept it

additional application requirements for Dokkyo University:

  • Nichibun
    • students of Japanese Studies or students of other disciplines with a major academic focus on Japan;

    • students of all majors with an interest in Japan and detailed motivation/reasons to study in Japan  
    • good language proficiency of English (at least B2; language certificate of a lecturer of English of Goethe University OR Toefl/IELTS)
  • graduate students may apply but may only take undergraduate courses at Doshisha University

  • Language requirements: Japanese or English (depending on program); official language test is not required, language certificate issued by department of Japanese Studies is sufficient) and/or English B2 (language certificate of a lecturer of English of Goethe University is sufficient)
  • MA students in their 1st semester: Grades received at Goethe University are required from nominated students at time of application at Sophia University (April). If you will not be able submit grades received from Goethe University by April (average at least 2,0), please do not apply. 

additional application requirements for University of Osaka:

  • Good academic standing (minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 // average grade 2,0 on the German grading scale)
  • Detailed description of planned studies or research at Osaka University (to be presented in the letter of motivation)
  • FrontierLab: a first email contact with the preferred research lab at Osaka University or even an unofficial acceptance of a lab is a definite plus for the application (but not obligatory) 
  • Language requirements: English or Japanese 
    • English: language certificate issued by a lecturer of Goethe University or DuoLingo English Test; see details on the right

Program benefits

  • on-campus housing is available to exchange students
    Costs before and during the stay abroad
    Tuition fees get waived for exchange students. However, costs of studying abroad should not be underestimated. All other costs will have to be paid by the exchange students themselves:
    • room and board 
    • travel costs
    • insurances 
    • other fees at the host institution may apply, e.g. administrative fees   

    Dokkyo University provides a detailed list of the approximate cost of living which will be similar at the other universities.

    At the time of application to the host institution, proof  of approx. 100,000 JPY / month will have to be submitted (e.g. bank balance) for the visa documents to be issued.

      • be in English (and, if different, language of host country; only expected of applicants who stated in their application that they have knowledge of that language) 
      • be about personal and academic motivation of applicant 
      • include possible other subjects such current and historic political and cultural affairs of host country as well as Germany 
    • final selection of exchange students by Goethe University's selection committee
    • final approval of the participation in the program is given by host institutions after applications have been submitted to them

    Students participating in our exchange programs may apply for financial aid and/or scholarships at other institutions:

    • DAAD-PROMOS (in April/Mai for fall; in November/December for spring)
    • DAAD-Jahresstipendium (for studying abroad for two semesters; please check the deadlines which are different for different countries and may be several months before the stay abroad) 
    • Auslands-BAföG (apply 6 months before studying abroad)

    Please check carefully whether you are eligible to apply: Some financial aid programs and scholarships might only be for German citizens or students who have graduated from German high school and/or have their permant residency in Germany. 

    Exchange students in Japan may apply for a JASSO scholarship (is decided annually whether it will be available; Info DoshishaInfo Osaka). 

    Osaka University: Participants of the exchange may apply for financial support from the guest institution

    Dokkyo University: Each partner university may nominate one exchange student to receive a scholarship by Dokkyo University (subject to change).

    • Regardless of the year of study at the home institution (i.e. undergraduate or postgraduate), all the incoming exchange students will be technically (on paper) placed as the second year of each school's undergraduate program. 
    • Exchange students may take classes taught in Japanese and/or English. 
    • Exchange students may take classes at the
      • School of International Liberal Arts
      • School of Economics and Business Administration 
      • School of Science 
      • School of Data Science
    • Japanese language classes are available on all levels. 

    general application requirements (for all our Direktaustauschprogramme):

    • applicants must be enrolled at Goethe University
    • applicants must be at least in their 2nd semester (BA), MA students may apply during their 1st semester
    • All majors may apply, there may be some restrictions regarding the available courses: students of medicine and law may apply but will not be able to take classes from their major at the host institution; restrictions regarding courses see first tab "host institution(s)"
    • Good academic standing 
    • Good language proficiency (at least B1, if not stated otherwise) - language certificates are valid for 2 years only!
    • good knowledge of  current and historic political and cultural affairs of host country and Germany
    • good knowledge of the host institution, available classes and a detailed study plan specific to the respective host institution(s)
    • It is expected of exchange students to return to Goethe-University after their study abroad period and continue and finish their studies here. 
    • Students who do not have a German Abitur or other German Hochschulzugangsberechtigung and who are enrolled in an English degree have to submit proof of German proficiency (preferably at least B1)
    • Applicants are expected to be able to take on an ambassador role for Goethe University and Frankfurt

    LANGUAGE CERTIFICATE JAPANESE:

    • Students of Japanese Studies: successful completion of language course at the institute (Modul Modernes Japanisch III = A2; Modul Modernes Japanisch IV = B1) 
    • Students of other majors: 
      • please contact language teachers Ms. Schruff and Ms. Nakano-Hofmann at the Institute of Japanese Studies for an appointment for a language assessment: nihongo@em.uni-frankfurt.de 
      • OR if you have a different proof of your language proficiency, please send it to us in advance so that we can determine whether we can accept it

    additional application requirements for Dokkyo University:

    • Language requirements: Japanese (language competence at least A2 / JLPT N5; official language test is not required, language certificate issued by department of Japanese Studies is sufficient)

    additional application requirements for Doshisha University:

    • Nichibun
      • students of Japanese Studies or students of other disciplines with a major academic focus on Japan; 
      • good language proficiency of Japanese (please see the information above);
    • Global Education Module
      • students of all majors with an interest in Japan and detailed motivation/reasons to study in Japan  
      • good language proficiency of English (at least B2; language certificate of a lecturer of English of Goethe University OR Toefl/IELTS)
    • graduate students may apply but may only take undergraduate courses at Doshisha University  

    additional application requirements for Hitotsubashi University: 

    • Good academic standing (minimum GPA of 2.7/4.0 // average grade 2,3 on the German grading scale)
    • Language requirements: Japanese (language competence at least JLPT Level 2 N2; official language test is not required, language certificate issued by department of Japanese Studies is sufficient) and/or English B2 (language certificate of a lecturer of English of Goethe University is sufficient)

    additional application requirements for Sophia University: 

    • Good academic standing (minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 // average grade 2,0 on the German grading scale)
    • Language requirements: Japanese or English (depending on program); official language test is not required, language certificate issued by department of Japanese Studies is sufficient) and/or English B2 (language certificate of a lecturer of English of Goethe University is sufficient)
    • MA students in their 1st semester: Grades received at Goethe University are required from nominated students at time of application at Sophia University (April). If you will not be able submit grades received from Goethe University by April (average at least 2,0), please do not apply. 

    additional application requirements for University of Osaka:

    • Good academic standing (minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 // average grade 2,0 on the German grading scale)
    • Detailed description of planned studies or research at Osaka University (to be presented in the letter of motivation)
    • FrontierLab: a first email contact with the preferred research lab at Osaka University or even an unofficial acceptance of a lab is a definite plus for the application (but not obligatory) 
    • Language requirements: English or Japanese 
      • English: language certificate issued by a lecturer of Goethe University or DuoLingo English Test; see details on the right

    additional application requirements for Yokohama City University:

    Program benefits
    • Tuition fee waiver (other fees may apply)

    • on-campus housing is available to exchange students
      Costs before and during the stay abroad
      Tuition fees get waived for exchange students. However, costs of studying abroad should not be underestimated. All other costs will have to be paid by the exchange students themselves:
      • room and board 
      • travel costs
      • insurances 
      • other fees at the host institution may apply, e.g. administrative fees   

      Dokkyo University provides a detailed list of the approximate cost of living which will be similar at the other universities.

      At the time of application to the host institution, proof  of approx. 100,000 JPY / month will have to be submitted (e.g. bank balance) for the visa documents to be issued.

      • You will need a letter of reference and a language proficiency certificate. Please see about these well in advance (the sooner the better): talk to a professor/lecturer about the letter of reference and make an appointment for the language test. No late submissions!

      • there might be a preselection based on written applications so that not all applicants will be invited
      Selection of exchange students: 
      • Depending on the number of applicants there may be a preselection based on the application documents.
      • all applicants will receive an email:
        • invitation to an interview OR  
        • rejection on the basis of submitted application    
      • interview will:
        • be in English (and, if different, language of host country; only expected of applicants who stated in their application that they have knowledge of that language) 
        • be about personal and academic motivation of applicant 
        • include possible other subjects such current and historic political and cultural affairs of host country as well as Germany 
      • final selection of exchange students by Goethe University's selection committee
      • final approval of the participation in the program is given by host institutions after applications have been submitted to them

      How to finance your stay abroad: 
      Students participating in our exchange programs may apply for financial aid and/or scholarships at other institutions:

      • DAAD-PROMOS (in April/Mai for fall; in November/December for spring)
      • DAAD-Jahresstipendium (for studying abroad for two semesters; please check the deadlines which are different for different countries and may be several months before the stay abroad) 
      • Auslands-BAföG (apply 6 months before studying abroad)
      • Bildungskredit
      • other scholarships

      Please check carefully whether you are eligible to apply: Some financial aid programs and scholarships might only be for German citizens or students who have graduated from German high school and/or have their permant residency in Germany. 

      Exchange students in Japan may apply for a JASSO scholarship (is decided annually whether it will be available; Info DoshishaInfo Osaka). 

      Osaka University: Participants of the exchange may apply for financial support from the guest institution

      Dokkyo University: Each partner university may nominate one exchange student to receive a scholarship by Dokkyo University (subject to change).
