Overview

Course content and focus areas 

The general aim of the program is to provide advanced training in the molecular and cellular principles of the functioning of human organ systems as well as the pathogenesis and therapy of human diseases. The program focuses on the areas of drug research, cardiovascular research and oncology/immunology. The course provides specialist training and instruction in various methodological and conceptual areas to equip students to independently carry out both basic scientific and clinical-translational research in the field of molecular medicine. The Master's degree program in Molecular Medicine is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills, to train independent scientific thinking and to lead them to act responsibly as scientists.

Conditions of admission 

Admission requirements
  • proof of a Bachelor's degree in Molecular Medicine or in the same subject area with a standard period of study of at least six semesters or

    proof of a degree at least equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from a German university or a German university of applied sciences in the same or a related subject area with a standard period of study of at least six semesters or at least 180 credit points (CP) or

    proof of at least an equivalent foreign degree in the same or a related subject area with a standard period of study of at least six semesters or at least 180 CP.

  • Previous studies must have a subject profile that forms the basis for admission to the Master's degree program in Molecular Medicine. Particular emphasis is placed on prior training in the subjects of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology and physiology, which are essential for the degree program.

  • Master's examination in the same subject area at another university that has not been definitively failed and has not lost the right to take the examination. The same applies to Master's examinations in related subject areas, provided that the Examination Board has determined that the subject areas correspond. A declaration of failed Master's examinations in the same or a related subject area must be submitted when applying for the degree program.

  • English language skills (language level B2) of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe" must be demonstrated by:
    1. five years of English lessons at a school until graduation (last report card grade at least "satisfactory") or
    2. an UNIcert level 2 qualification or
    3. a TOEFL test (Internet-based score at least 80)or 
    4. an IELTS test (score at least 5.0)
    5. other evidence recognised as equivalent by the Examination Board, for example a qualified university degree from a degree programme completed exclusively in English.
Provisional admission

If the university entrance qualification for the consecutive Master’s programme (namely the Bachelor’s degree) has not yet been completed, you can apply for the programme with a transcript of records on the basis of at least 144 credit points. This provisional certificate must be issued by an office authorised to award grades or issue certificates. If a student is admitted, this will be on a provisional basis. Provisional admission is valid until the end of the first semester of the master’s program. The bachelor’s degree must thus be handed in by March 31 the latest.

Mode of admission Admission will be not restricted.
Selection procedure  An interview, which includes an oral examination, will be held to determine whether the applicant fulfils the special professional requirements - previous training in the subjects of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology and physiology.
