Specializations and Focus Areas

Overview

Throughout their studies, students can refine their academic profile by taking elective modules. They can choose between a flexible specialization and a defined focus area. While a specialization can be chosen freely and is not listed by name on the diploma, a focus area follows a clearly defined structure and is listed on the diploma.

Specializations

The specializations in the bachelor's degree program in physics are particular strength of the degree program at Goethe University. Studnts can choose from an exceptionally wide range of courses and focus on their individual interests. As a result, it is possible to study courses that are entirely up to the student’s own preferences, without having to formally register them at the examination office. However, a specialization is not listed on the diploma.

Focus Areas

In comparision to specializations, the focus areas in the bachelor's degree program in physics focus on a clearly structured and thematically in-depth study of a specific subject area. The department offers focus areas in gephysics and in physics of atmosphere and climate, which are listed on the diploma and therefore highlight a specific academic focus.
