Program Structure Master's Degree in Physics

A key feature of the master's degree program in physics at Goethe University is its rich selection of elective courses, from which students can choose freely to customize their studies and focus on their personal interests.

Overview

Mandatory and elective courses

In the required curriculum, students must complete mandatory courses worth 18 CP in the following areas:

  • 12 CP Research and laboratory practical course
  • 3 CP Proseminar, which is not related to the topic of the master’s thesis
  • 3 CP Seminar for presenting findings of your master's thesis

The required elective area and the minor (42 CP) are designed to allow students to tailor their studies to their individual interests. This phase of the program is divided into:

  • 26 – 42 CP in the required elective area (specialization modules in physics)
  • 0 – 16 CP in the minor (various subjects such as business administration, philosophy, or chemistry).

Master's thesis

The program concludes with the master's thesis (60 CP), which consists of the following components:

  • 15 CP Academic specialization (Introduction to Academic Writing)
  • 15 CP Project development
  • 30 CP Master’s Thesis
