Contemporary culture and society are shaped by scientific knowledge from the natural and human sciences. This knowledge has undergone a long and complex historical development, deeply intertwined with all aspects of human history. Since classical antiquity, it has also been a subject of philosophical reflection, focusing on the nature and dynamics of the type of knowledge that claims scientific status. This reflection itself has a distinctly historical dimension, evolving alongside the cultures and sciences it examines. The minor program is designed to help students develop expertise in the historical and philosophical reflection of scientific knowledge, as well as its historically shifting technical, social, and cultural significance. The history and philosophy of sciences explore the records of scientific thought and practice, along with the philosophical reflection on sciences, across all historical periods and cultures.
