The bachelor's program in Korean Studies as a minor provides the following fundamental knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of modern Korean standard language;
  • Understanding of the political, social, economic, and cultural structures of modern Korea, as well as their historical principles;
  • Knowledge of intercultural communication;
  • Familiarity with the fundamentals of academic work and competencies in the procurement, analysis, evaluation, preparation, and presentation of Korea-related data and information;
  • Knowledge of the history of Korean Studies as a field and the ability to critically and reflectively engage with Korea-related data, sources, texts, and methods.
  • The program also teaches specialized techniques and methods:
  • Addressing specific cultural, political, and social issues from the history and present of North and South Korea;
  • Korean communication and language culture, as well as methods in society and culture studies with reference to Korea, theory and practice of inter- and transcultural communication

Structure and content

In the bachelor's program in Korean Studies as a minor, courses are divided into language modules, content modules, and advanced modules. Language modules focus on acquiring and deepening modern Korean language skills. Content modules introduce the fundamental topics and research methods of Korean Studies. In advanced modules, students consolidate and apply the language and subject-specific skills they have already acquired in the area of "Modern Korea." Within the advanced module, students can freely choose a seminar from the areas of "Korea and East Asia" or "Recent Research on Modern Korea."
