Art history, as part of history and culture and civilization studies, explores and conveys the uniqueness, function, and impact of artworks in the areas of architecture, sculpture, painting, graphic design, and arts and crafts from Late Antiquity onward, as well as industrial design, photography, and audiovisual media. The field also examines its societal and political contexts. Its core focus lies on European regions since Late Antiquity and the non-European areas engaged in dialogue with them.

The BA program in art history as a minor provides foundational knowledge of art historical content and methods, an overview of key periods and genres, their discursive and social contexts, and major developments in the history of the discipline. Students will develop essential skills such as precise observation and analysis of objects, methodologically and historically informed reflection, critical text analysis, and the ability to translate visual phenomena into language.
