Course content and focus areas
The master's program in political theory, created by Goethe University Frankfurt and Technical University Darmstadt, is the first degree of its kind in Germany. Students attend lectures at both universities and are tutored by faculty from both institutions, which jointly award the academic degree. This program provides students with the theoretical knowledge and academic skills necessary for a comprehensive analysis of the current political situation and its dynamics. Students confront ideas of justice, democracy, and power with the world’s increasingly complex problems. The course includes:
- An historical perspective: a historical, conceptual, and critical reconstruction of systematically relevant theoretical approaches
- A philosophical perspective includes an analysis of terms and a normative discussion of current political issues.
- A theoretical perspective on institutions is also included, offering an empirically based reflection on how legitimate political relations can be developed in complex societies.
Political theory is the focus of this interdisciplinary program. In addition to political science and its various branches, the program includes philosophy, sociology, law, and economics.
