Application for (Post)Graduate Studies

Are you considering pursuing another course at university or college and wondering if it qualifies as (post)graduate studies?

You are considered a postgraduate applicant if you have already completed a first undergraduate course (e.g., bachelor's degree or State Examination) at a German higher education institution and are applying for another undergraduate course. In Hessen, no additional fees are charged for postgraduate studies beyond the regular semester contribution.

Note regarding master's degree programs: Starting a master's degree program after completing a bachelor's degree does not count as postgraduate studies. Would you like to pursue another master's degree after completing your current one? In that case, simply apply through the regular application process for master's degree programs.

Your course is considered completed once you have successfully passed the required final examination.
Exceptions: For law and teacher training programs, the course is considered completed upon passing the first State Examination; for pharmacy, it is considered completed upon passing the second part of the pharmaceutical examination.
Haven’t quite finished your course yet? If you complete your final examination by the end of the application deadline, you can decide whether to apply as a first-time applicant or a postgraduate applicant.

Who applies where? For the restricted admission degree programs in medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy, you must apply for postgraduate studies via hochschulstart.de (more information available here). For all other degree programs, please use the Goethe Campus portal of Goethe University for your application. Regular application deadlines apply. If you are applying for DoSV degree programs, you must register with hochschulstart.de before submitting your online application through Goethe Campus, as you will need BID and BAN.

Submitting your application: After logging into Goethe Campus, you can complete the online application process. To finalize your online application, you may need to confirm specific admission requirements depending on your degree program/subject.

If the degree program does not have restricted admission and your application is submitted on time, it is generally approved. For restricted admission degree programs, a selection process is conducted: Study places are allocated based on criteria (case group), and points are awarded for both. These points are combined into a score, which is used to rank all applications on a list. Study places are then allocated based on this ranking.
