Guiding Principles for the Subject of Biology

  1. Biology is the science of life, spanning everything from molecular foundations to interconnected ecosystems. At its core are living organisms: humans, animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria.
  2. Biology explores the unique phenomena and processes of life: the diversity of living organisms and their origins, the principles governing structure, function, and life processes, the role of evolution in shaping structure and function, the dynamics and complexity of biological systems, the variety of living habitats, and the interactions between organisms and their living and non-living environments.
  3. Biology contributes to understanding the world from a scientific perspective. By studying life, students gain awareness that humans are part of nature, and our survival is closely tied to other living beings and the environment. Biology classes help young people develop their personal sense of identity and connection to the world.
  4. Biology lessons go beyond teaching biological knowledge—they also introduce students to the methods and mindset of biology as a distinct natural science. The curriculum emphasizes inquiry-based, problem-solving learning, teaching scientific methods and terminology, encouraging precise scientific work, and fostering critical analysis of results. Developing and applying models enhances abstract thinking and creativity, which are practiced through diverse examples.
  5. Advances in biology and medicine, along with their technological applications, increasingly shape our society. Biology classes address current biological phenomena and discoveries, their applications, and the ethical questions they raise.
  6. The knowledge gained in biology lessons promotes responsible and sustainable interactions with nature. Modern biology education includes environmental awareness and encourages students to take action and develop skills for protecting nature and the environment. Interdisciplinary approaches to environmental education, as well as other cross-cutting topics like health promotion and sex education, are strongly encouraged.

The specific competencies derived from these principles are outlined in the following sections.
