Teaching at High Schools (L3)

Important information at a glance

Degree: L3 - Teaching at high schools (Gymnasium)Language of Instruction: GermanStart of studies: Winter semesterAdmission: NC (restricted admission)Standard period of study:

Geography is a field of science that explores the Earth's surface, focusing on its physical characteristics, spatial differences, and its role as the space where human life and activities unfold. In schools, the subject is referred to as "Geography," and it is also the name of the field of study in degree programs L2, L3, and L5. Geography examines both natural and social structures and processes, shaping the physical environment as well as the spatial dynamics of human communities. Within the discipline, Physical Geography and Human Geography have developed into relatively independent branches, each with its own questions and methods. These branches often collaborate closely to address various issues, such as geoecology, energy systems, or sustainable regional development.

The Geography program, culminating in the First State Examination for teaching at high schools, aims to prepare students to independently teach Geography for grades 5 through 13. This is done with a critical perspective and in alignment with principles of enlightenment and empowerment-focused education. The program emphasizes foundational scientific methods and approaches, preparation for civic engagement, and effective communication skills. It also integrates insights from education and social sciences to enrich the study of Geography. Practical experiences, such as project seminars, on-site workshops, and school-based teaching internships, serve as key reference points and starting grounds for academic learning.
