Career opportunities
Potential career fields arise in many areas where the structure and composition of linguistic expressions play a role. Linguists work in industrial research, communication and information technology, editing scientific and non-scientific texts, and mass media.
Additionally, linguistics provides the theoretical foundation for any in-depth engagement with individual languages, whether in the editorial development of language teaching materials and dictionaries or in language instruction, especially in the area of German as a second or foreign language. Fundamental linguistic research is also valuable in education and in the field of speech therapy.
Linguists can find career opportunities in research and teaching (a master's degree is typically required here), in libraries and archives, at documentation centers, in editorial offices, publishing houses, radio and television stations, in the IT and internet sector, in federal and state ministries, in expert evaluations for courts, in speech recognition in criminal investigations, as well as in language consulting for legislation, international organizations, adult education institutions, and, with appropriate specialization, in therapy-related fields or the performing arts.
The Was werden?" (What can I Become?) page of the Career Service also offers an overview of potential career paths and fields of work, along with interviews with alumni of Goethe University.
