Medical training

After successfully completing medical school and obtaining a medical license, doctors can begin training to become specialists. This training is carried out on a full-time basis at approved training facilities (e.g., hospital departments, rehabilitation clinics, or medical practices). Medical work is remunerated. In Germany, it is not the universities but the medical associations, in Hesse the Landesärztekammer Hessen (Hesse Medical Association), that are responsible for the training regulations. There are currently 33 areas in Hesse in which further training is possible: from general medicine and anesthesiology to ophthalmology, neurology, and forensic medicine to transfusion medicine and urology. In several areas, such as surgery and internal medicine, various specialist titles (FA) can be acquired, e.g., FA cardiac surgery or FA internal medicine and gastroenterology. The content and duration of the respective further training are specified in the further training regulations for doctors in Hesse. A special feature is the further training in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. In addition to a medical license, this also requires a state dental examination.

Fields of activity

The aim of medical practice is to preserve life, alleviate suffering, and protect or restore health. Doctors work mainly in practices and clinics. Other employment opportunities are available, for example, in public health departments, rehabilitation facilities, health centers, hospices, medical laboratories, medical associations, and health insurance companies. In addition, doctors can also work in medical research and medical education. Employment opportunities for doctors are currently excellent.
