The Commission operates in accordance with Goethe University's Statute for Managing Contributions from Private Third Parties.
Following the unanimous Senate vote on October 22, 2008, Goethe University established guidelines for managing private donations, endowments, and sponsorships in its Statute for Managing Contributions from Private Third Parties ("Foundation Code"). The code sets standards for private third party donations, including the provision that donations to Goethe University must serve charitable purposes and can only be accepted under the following conditions:

The Executive Board and Senate will establish an independent commission that can be approached by any university member and consulted by the Executive Board when accepting funds. The commission includes one representative each from the fields of law and economics, humanities and social sciences, natural sciences, and medicine. In addition, the commission co-opts an additional member from the discipline that would receive a potential donation. The commission may also issue recommendations to the Executive Board on its own initiative or directly address the Senate. For donations exceeding €500,000 per year, the commission must be informed at an early stage.
