A Sun on Earth – Nuclear Fusion as a CO2-free Energy Source

In times of change towards a low-carbon energy supply and boosted by the recent success in laser fusion, the advantages of nuclear fusion as an attractive energy source have come into focus for politicians and private investors. This presentation introduces the concept of magnetic fusion and outlines the path to a fusion reactor. The prospects for magnetic fusion are compared with those for laser fusion and the concepts developed by start-ups. The role of plasma, in which energy is harvested from the fusion of hydrogen isotopes, and its physical properties are explained.
