All About Insurance During Your Studies

Health Insurance for Students

Students enrolled at public or officially recognized universities in Germany are required to have health insurance (exceptions listed below). This applies even if you live abroad, though you may not be eligible for certain benefits due to legal regulations.

There are two types of health insurance: statutory (GKV) and private (PKV).

In most cases, your mandatory health insurance coverage ends with the semester in which you turn 30. However, it may continue if certain circumstances justify exceeding the age limit, such as the type of education or training, family or personal reasons, completing qualifications at a second-chance education institution, or an extended period of specialized study.

If you’re working alongside your studies or completing an internship, be sure to check in with your health insurance provider ahead of time and discuss any specific details with your employer if needed.

Information on Student Health Insurance

Health Insurance for International Students

Health insurance (including long-term care insurance) is mandatory for international students under the age of 30 who wish to enroll at Goethe University. As part of the enrollment process, you’ll need to provide proof of insurance. Please note that travel health insurance isn’t sufficient for studying in Germany.

Accident Insurance and Reporting Center

Students attending Goethe University Frankfurt, including guest auditors and U3L students, may be covered by the university’s accident insurance under certain circumstances in the event of an accident. Accidents that are directly related to attending the university—such as work-related or commuting accidents as defined by Social Code (SGB) VII—should be reported to the university as campus-related incidents. After reviewing the report for completeness, the university will forward it to the Accident Insurance Fund of Hesse (UKH).

Important to note: If an accident occurs while working at Goethe University Frankfurt—for example, as an employee or student assistant—it should be reported to your supervisor and submitted to the HR Department’s accident office.
