University Place with Admission Restrictions
How the Selection Process Works
How the Selection Process Works
Some degree programs are very popular, meaning there are more applicants than available spots. In this case, the degree program is referred to as having restricted admission. This means there is a selection process, and you will need particularly strong qualifications to secure a spot.
When a degree program has restricted admission, it is also referred to as NC, which stands for Numerus Clausus (loosely translated: limited number).
This does not mean there is a fixed grade required for access to a course at university, but rather that there is a threshold grade up to which admissions are granted. This threshold grade is determined anew in each selection process, depending on how many applicants apply and the qualifications they bring.
Below, we provide a brief overview of the selection process for undergraduate programs at Goethe University.
Please note that the degree programs in medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy have their own selection process through the central allocation procedure of the Foundation for University Admissions (Hochschulstart). You can find more information on Hochschulstart as well as additional details for medicine and dentistry here and for pharmacy here.

“Not sure who to contact with your request? Get in touch with us and we will help you or refer you to the right place!”
Admissions to courses are announced through the Goethe Campus portal (no postal delivery). If you receive an admission, you must actively accept your university place within a specific deadline; otherwise, the place will expire.
Any places that become available will be allocated through clearing procedures—no separate application is required for this. However, only applicants who submitted their application by the deadline will be considered. Late applications for the clearing procedures are not possible.
If there are still unfilled places after the clearing procedures are completed, these will be allocated through a lottery system. A separate registration is required for this. You can apply for the lottery system even if you have not applied previously.
Prev. NC values can serve as a guide but are not a guarantee for the future—the thresholds are determined anew in each process based on the number and quality (high school grades and waiting periods).
