Important information at a glance

Degree: L5 - Teaching in special needs education (Förderschule)Language of Instruction: GermanStart of studies: Winter semesterAdmission: Unrestricted admissionStandard period of study:

The study of Catholic Theology as a reference discipline aims to equip students with the ability to explore their own questions related to religion and Christian faith in an academic manner. It also helps them acquire the theological and religious education/didactic skills needed for their future profession. These skills include engaging thoughtfully with Jewish and Christian traditions, gaining foundational knowledge of the history of global Christianity, presenting the core aspects of Christian faith in a clear and contemporary way, reflecting on norms in relation to action, understanding the most influential religious worldviews and movements—especially the major world religions—and critically evaluating religious and church practices with an eye toward their own potential actions.

The program is structured into the following theological areas:

  1. Philosophy of Religion and Religious Studies,
  2. Biblical and Historical Theology, which includes Old Testament, New Testament, and Church History,
  3. Systematic Theology, which covers Fundamental Theology and Dogmatics, Moral Theology, and Social Ethics,
  4. Practical Theology, with subjects such as Pastoral Theology/Kerygmatics, Religious Education, Religious Didactics, Media Didactics, and Liturgical Studies.

Another key component of the program is engaging with non-European theologies (Intercultural Theology). Feminist theological topics are integrated into the curriculum both through dedicated courses and interdisciplinary perspectives. For students pursuing teaching degrees, the didactic component is given particular emphasis. This includes explicit courses on religious and media didactics, as well as the integration of didactic perspectives into subject-specific courses. These courses are designed to be methodologically and pedagogically enriching, ensuring that students can benefit from diverse presentation and learning formats that will support their future professional endeavors.
