The Art program prepares students for both scholarly and artistic approaches to art education in high school classrooms. Throughout the program, students develop creative skills for working with a wide range of artistic and cultural media, gain authentic experiences with art, and refine their personal ways of perceiving and expressing ideas. The teaching principle of aesthetic learning equips them to lead interdisciplinary learning situations as well as specialized art classes. Through academically and methodologically reflective studies in art education, they acquire the foundation for professional art teaching practices. The academic, practical, and educational components of the program are aligned with the competencies outlined in § 1 of the Regulation for the Implementation of the Hessian Teacher Education Act (HLbG-UVO). These course offerings are closely interconnected in content.

Application Process and Admissions

This degree program has restricted admission (NC) within the university. Admission is determined through a process where 20% of the spots are allocated based on waiting time and 80% based on the average grade of your higher education entrance qualification. Waiting time refers to the period between completing your high school diploma and applying for the program (excluding any time spent studying).

If you’re applying to a program or subject that requires an aptitude test, you’ll need to register directly with the respective department.

  • Entrance exams are held between May 20 and June 30 for the winter semester, and between November 20 and December 31 for the summer semester.

Specific dates will be announced well in advance and can be found on the homepage of the Department of Art Education.
Registration deadlines for the entrance exams are May 15 for the winter semester and November 15 for the summer semester.

Once you’ve passed the aptitude test, you’ll receive confirmation from the relevant department.

With this written proof of passing the test, you can then submit your application to the Registrar’s Office, making sure to follow the required format and meet the deadline.

You can easily apply through Goethe University’s application portal within the specified application deadline. During the online application process, you’ll find out if any supporting documents are required and which ones need to be submitted.
