Zoo and wildlife biology

The focus of zoological gardens has changed more and more in recent decades. In modern zoos, nature and species conservation, education and research are seen as the main tasks. In the current World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Strategy, the conservation of biodiversity and participation in species conservation is therefore anchored as a continuous principle in the activities of zoos. Within the module, current focal points, which include zoo and wildlife research methods, species conservation, population biology and conservation breeding programmes, animal ethics and husbandry conditions, veterinary aspects, enrichment and animal welfare, are taught theoretically and illustrated with examples in various zoological gardens.

The thematic orientation of the practical module parts is based on current research questions. Within the practical course, the methodological basics of modern behavioural research are developed. The following topics, among others, are dealt with: Community husbandry, habitat and behaviour enrichment in zoo animals, chronobiology, animal-human interaction, visitor studies, husbandry and care of zoo animals.
