Mathematics is a required subject in the elementary education program. The training focuses on four key objectives:

  1. It aims to create a strong connection between mathematical content and the methods of teaching mathematics.
  2. In addition to covering the curriculum for grades 1 through 6, broader mathematical concepts are also explored.
  3. The teaching methods for mathematics go beyond practical classroom strategies and are thoroughly examined within empirically-based theories on elementary math education.
  4. The program emphasizes consistent engagement with empirical approaches to teaching mathematics, not only during the school internship (Practical School Studies, Phase 2) but also throughout every other module.

During student advising, questions often focus on the difficulty of the mathematical content. For this reason, the following explanations address the mathematical aspects. However, we want to stress that this is only one part of the program. Based on our experience, students often find the teaching methods for mathematics—an area of research that is new to most of them—more challenging than the mathematical content itself.
