Dr. Magda Majewska is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of American Studies. From 2016 to 2019, she was Assistant Professor (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin), associated with Prof. Susanne Opfermann’s professorship. Dr. Majewska received her Ph.D. from the Free University Berlin in 2016 (summa cum laude), where she wrote her dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Ulla Haselstein and Prof. Heinz Ickstadt. In 2019, her dissertation appeared as a monograph, titled Lust und Limit: Der postmoderne Roman und die sexuelle Befreiungsbewegung in den USA (Bielefeld: transcript). The study provides a new understanding of the American postmodern novel by showing how paradigmatic postmodernists like William Burroughs and Thomas Pynchon engaged with ideas on sexual liberation articulated by Freudo-Marxist thinkers. The postmodernists’ cultural critique, her study shows, comes to the fore particularly in the way they used experimental literary techniques to explore sexuality, which in their work appears as the refraction of the struggle between control and liberation. Currently, Magda Majewska is at work on her second monograph (Habilitation) on the genre of the Hollywood romantic comedy and its precursors in literary history. Research and teaching interests include postmodernism, psychoanalysis, the history of sexuality, gender theory, sociology of love, the sentimental novel, and the Victorian novel.

Der postmoderne Roman und die sexuelle Befreiungsbewegung in den USA

Sexualität als Brennpunkt des Konflikts zwischen Kontrolle und Freiheit ist ein Schlüsselthema in den frühen Romanen der amerikanischen Postmoderne. Magda Majewska beleuchtet den Zusammenhang zwischen experimenteller literarischer Praxis, Kulturkritik und Sexualität am Beispiel von Thomas Pynchons Gravity's Rainbow und William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch. Dabei rekonstruiert sie das Verhältnis von Trieb und Kultur in den beiden Romanen vor dem Hintergrund freudomarxistischer Diskurse der sexuellen Befreiung und ihrer Bedeutung für die amerikanische Gegenkultur. Erst diese ideengeschichtliche Einbettung erlaubt es, die Welthaltigkeit und politische Stoßkraft des postmodernen Romans offenzulegen.
