Project MGK "Integrated research training group"

Project leader: Prof. Esther Rinke

Three central aims of the collaborative research center on “Negation in Language and Beyond” are to qualify early-career researchers for the academic and non-academic job market, to promote their academic independence, and to enable them to complete high-quality research projects in a timely manner. In order to achieve this, the Integrated Research Training Group provides a structured qualification program that includes different qualification measures as well as activities beyond the individual projects to promote and support early-career researchers at different career stages.

In order to enable doctoral researchers to pursue and complete their individual dissertation projects within the funding period and to envisage the next steps in their academic or non-academic career, we offer a targeted and effective qualification program including mandatory measures such as a retreat and methodological and data evaluation trainings supplemented by optional measures like linguistic courses, colloquia, or short-term stays that can be flexibly adapted to individual needs.

For postdoctoral researchers, we offer mentoring opportunities for individual career development support from more experienced colleagues in academia or other fields. We enable them to expand their own scientific network, improve their visibility within the scientific community, and offer need-tailored measures to support them on their way to increasing independence as researchers.

In order to foster intra- and inter-area collaborations, scientific independence, networking and exchange within the peer group and beyond, we offer networking events such as retreats, network funds for short-term individual collaboration projects, and funds for short-term stays abroad. Short-term fellowships will be offered to integrate postdoctoral or doctoral researchers from abroad into individual projects relating to the research focus of the CRC. Our program also includes opportunities for exchange with high-profile international visiting researchers, and, in cooperation with Goethe University’s graduate academy GRADE, additional training, consulting, career talks and networking events, specifically with a view to open up professional employment perspectives in the non-academic job market.

In accordance with the faculty-wide supervision agreement, we offer structured supervision for doctoral researchers by at least two participating researchers. Postdoctoral researchers can function as first (and second) supervisors and participate in a mentoring program, providing individual support and advice. An ombudsperson will act as an independent and confidential contact in cases of conflict. In order to foster independence and participation in the planning and decision-making within the Integrated Research Training Group, postdoctoral and doctoral researchers will be involved in the management board of the MGK.
