Trans-curricular Teaching

Fostering discourse literacies in the primary classroom by implementing one topic with the use of students’ L1+L2+L3 in more than one subject

This project is interested in the primary classroom and the question how foreign languages can be taught best. On the basis of empirical data that has been collected within the last 50 years, it is clear to say that currently implemented aims and principles in teaching a foreign language have to be adjusted for the German context. While alternative programs such as CLIL und autonomous learning are extending, it is becoming obvious that teaching foreign languages in regular state schools is lacking opportunities in developing discourse competencies. Assuming that even primary school children are able to acquire and use languages in more complex situations than they are used to, a model has been developed that enables teacher to combine several languages with different subject matters and generic competencies on a content-driven basis. In this project is shown, how students are able to use their L1 + L2 +L3 in communicative tasks that are implemented in their English lessons as well as in other subjects that deal with aspects of the same topic.
