„LINKING AGES – THE MATERIAL-DISCURSIVE PRACTICES OF UN/DOING AGE ACROSS THE LIFE COURSE”

Die Emmy Noether-Nachwuchsgruppe „Linking Ages“ hat mit 01.09.2022 ihre Arbeit an der Goethe Universität aufgenommen. In ihr untersuchen Forschende verschiedener Karrierestufen soziale, diskursive und materielle Alterskonstruktionen über den Lebenslauf.

Alter ist in unserer Gesellschaft eine zentrale Differenzkategorie. Aktuelle Ansätze des Un/Doing Age verstehen Altersgrenzen als praktische Vollzugswirklichkeiten – nicht als etwas, das Menschen sind oder tun, sondern als etwas, das durch materiell-diskursive Grenzziehungspraktiken hergestellt und gestaltet wird. In der Nachwuchsgruppe gehen wir den Fragen nach: Wie wird Alter in verschiedenen Lebensphase hergestellt und gestaltet? Welche materiell-diskursiven Grenzziehungspraktiken stellen Altersgrenzen über den Lebensverlauf her, und welche Rolle spielt die Forschung selbst dabei?

Jedes Projekt, das an die Nachwuchsgruppe angeschlossen ist, erforscht also, wie Alter in materiell-diskursiven Praktiken hergestellt wird und fokussiert dabei auf ausgewählte materielle Elemente von Praktiken (Körper, Räume oder Dinge) sowie die damit verbundenen diskursiven Elemente (Regulationen, Repräsentationen). Dazu werden mindestens zwei Lebensphasen in den Blick genommen und kontrastiert, relationiert sowie perspektiviert. Alle Projekte wenden multi-methodische Forschungsdesigns an, die Zugriff sowohl auf die materiellen (z.B. Ethnografie, Artefaktanalyse) als auch die diskursiven (z.B. Interviews, Dokumentenanalyse) Elemente der Praxis erlauben.

The Emmy Noether Research Group "Linking Ages" started its work at Goethe University on 1 September 2022. Under its umbrella, researchers from different career stages investigate social, discursive and material practices of doing and undoing age across the life course.

Age is a central category of difference in our society. Current approaches to un/doing age understand age boundaries as practical accomplishments - not as something that people are or do, but as something that is produced and shaped by material-discursive boundary drawing practices. In the research group, we pursue the questions: How is age produced and shaped in different phases of life? What material-discursive boundary-drawing practices produce age boundaries over the life course, and what role does research itself play in this?

Each project affiliated with the research group thus explores how age is constructed in material-discursive practices, focusing on selected material elements of practices (bodies, spaces or things) as well as the associated discursive elements (regulations, representations). For this purpose, at least two phases of life are taken into consideration and contrasted, related and perspectivised. All projects use multi-method research designs that allow access to both the material (e.g. ethnography, artefact analysis) and the discursive (e.g. interviews, document analysis) elements of practice.
