The Institute for Cardiovascular Physiology (Director Prof. Dr. Ralf P. Brandes) is part of the pre-clinic of the faculty of medicine of Goethe University Frankfurt. Together with our colleagues at neurophysiology (Physiology II) we provide the pre-clinical teaching for our discipline to medical and dental students. Our research interests are bundled together with the institute for cardiovascular Signalling (IVS) in the vascular research centre (VRC). Our strong research interest focusses around the physiology and pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system. Different groups study aspects of cardiovascular epigenetics, control of translation, redox-regulation, metabolic control and lipid signaling. We are particularly interested to understand how acute and chronic damage results is adaption and misadaptation of the cardiovascular system particularly during atherosclerosis development, angiogenesis and development of heart failure. All of the projects have a translational biomedicine emphasis with the aim of improving on current cardiovascular disease therapy.

Projects housed at VRC belong to three different collaborative research centres (CRCs) including CRC 1531 Damage control by the stroma-vascular compartment, CRC 1039 Disease-relevant signal transduction by fatty acid derivatives and sphingolipids,  TRR267 Non-coding RNA in the cardiovascular system . The institute also belongs to the Cardio Pulmonary Institute (a German Research Foundation funded Excellence Cluster) and the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK).
