These days international experience is essential for success. Students of American and English Studies should have a first-rate command of English – and going abroad can easily improve your language skills.
Goethe University offers a wide range of options for students who want to go abroad:

TEFL STEP Programme (Student Teachers of English School Placement Abroad)
If you are
studying English at the Institute of English and American Studies with the aim
of becoming a teacher of English, and if you are considering a stay abroad as
one of the practical components of your Lehramts degree, then you have found
your way to the right place on the web.
Every year
around June (the exact dates are to be found both in the 'News' section and on
the IEAS blog) applications may be made for a place on the STEP programme.
Before you decide to make an application, you are cordially invited to read
what follows – which will answer your questions about the scheme.
Prof. Dr. Stefanie Frisch, Programme manager
In 2025 I start implementing the
international school placement to students at the University of Frankfurt. The
programme is inspired by Prof Diehr's PrimA programme at the University of

What will you gain from a school placement abroad?
It is highly recommended that students of modern foreign languages who wish to become teachers spend a minimum of three months residence abroad, thus strengthening the professional competence of future teachers of foreign languages. Participating in the TEFL Department’s STEP programme, you can combine this stay abroad with the obligatory practical components of your Lehramt's degree (=Praxissemester). The five most important objectives are:
1. growth of competence in general everyday communication in the foreign language, i.e. in English
2. development of professionally oriented and subject specific language
3. cultural and general knowledge about the country in which the internship takes place
4. cultural and pragmatic competences
5. development of the full range of practical teaching skills
The school placement abroad is integrated into the Praxissemester-Modul, in which you can obtain the necessary credits for the practical components. The entire package includes the preparatory class, the follow-up class, and the placement at an English, Irish or French school.
STEP - the programme's order of events
(1) The preparatory course component, PS-FD1
Englisch (Long-term school placement abroad), which always takes place in the
winter semester at the Goethe University, concerns the theory and practice of
bilingual education and intercultural learning. Among other matters, the
students concentrate on the British and Irish school system and the issue of
'critical incidents'; they prepare themselves in classroom discourse, design
and plan units of lessons; they prepare contributions to the life of the
partner schools and begin to research and design their individual academic
study projects which they will undertake during the course of the placement.
(2) During the three-to-four-month placement during the summer term at a British or Irish school, the students conduct their study project; they work in co-operation not only with the staff of their placement school: additionally, they are in contact with their University of Frankfurt tutor, who will visit them towards the middle point of their school placement. During their placements the students act as cultural ambassadors for their own country and thus become more aware of their own cultural backgrounds.
(3) Taking place between the summer and winter semesters at Goethe University, the follow-up meeting gives the returning students space and opportunity to reflect on their observations, experiences and research projects. This process, mainly conducted through exchanges with other participants and with the lecturer, allows the students to consolidate the progress they have made in intercultural learning, comparing their experience on placement with the expectations they had before the start of their time abroad. A valuable stage of this evaluation process occurs when those returning from placement pass on their experiences to members of the following year.

Students enrolled in a teaching degree can do an internship as an English teacher abroad. Our department cooperates with the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst to send Assistant Teachers to different institutions abroad.
If you want to study abroad and need support concerning the application, financing, the transfer of the certificates or in other areas, you can turn to several departments at Goethe University Frankfurt, such as our department, and the Akademie für Bildungsforschung und Lehrerbildung.
