"Documenting and Archiving Language and Culture in the Digital Age"

International Summer School on "Documenting and Archiving Language and Culture in the Digital Age" from August 29 to September 8, 2023 in Batumi (Georgia)

Digital documentation and archiving of language and culture is a necessary prerequisite for cultural heritage research in the 21st century. Today, it is estimated that almost half of the 7,000 extant languages will disappear by 2150. According to The Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages, languages are disappearing faster than animal or plant species. It is significant that the languages of Indigenous peoples are in danger of disappearing, most of which are still undocumented, which means that not only the language as a system but also the Intangible cultural heritageof the indigenous population will disappear along with these languages.

Due to the relevance of the topic, the Academy of Digital Humanities is holding an international summer school – "Documenting and Archiving Language and Culture in the Digital Age", financed by the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation, (Georgia) ID: MG-ISE-23-1017.

We are very exited to announce, that the International Symposium Digital Caucasiology - a Change of Paradigms? will be hosted by the Institute for Empirical Linguistics at Goethe University Frankfurt on October 4th-8th, 2023

The symposium is meant to provide, for the first time ever, an international forum for the discussion of topical questions, with a view to developing common structures and to clarifying the relation between digital and “traditional” approaches.

Oxford Fellowship für Prof. Dr. Saloumeh Gholami

Die Sprachwissenschaftlerin Prof. Dr. Saloumeh Gholami erhält ein renommiertes Fellowship an der University of Oxford. Seit fünf Jahren organisiert der Litauische Schriftstellerverband Workshops zur literarischen Übersetzung an verschiedenen europäischen Universitäten, an denen Litauisch unterrichtet wird. Während des Workshops lernen die Studierenden die Grundlagen des literarischen Übersetzens, versuchen sich selbst in künstlerischer Übersetzung und haben die Möglichkeit, sich mit den Autoren auszutauschen.

Im Jahr 2023 findet die Übersetzungswerkstatt am Institut, im Rahmen der Veranstalltungen zum 700. Jubiläum der litauischen Hauptstadt Vilnius statt.

2022 haben Studierende und DoktorandInnen Gedichte von Zita Mažeikaitė und Antanas A. Jonynas übersetzt und vorgelesen. 2021 Texte von Kotryna Zylė und Tomas Dirgėla, 2020 – Gedichte von Dainius Dirgėla und Gytis Norvilas.

Die Aktivitäten der Litauischen Schriftstellerverbandes „Literarische Übersetzungsworkshops in den baltischen Studienzentren“ werden vom litauischen Kulturrat unterstützt.

Das Herzstück des Instituts

Das Kernstück des TITUS-Portals bildet eine umfangreiche Textsammlung, die hauptsächlich altindogermanische, aber auch jüngere indogermanische und nicht-indogermanische Texte umfasst und zudem über Datenbankabfragen erschlossen werden kann. Darüber hinaus befinden sich auf der Website von TITUS zahlreiche Informationen zur Vergleichenden und Indogermanischen Sprachwissenschaft im Allgemeinen sowie spezifisch in Frankfurt am Main.
