Linguistics

Linguistics at the IEAS

Linguistics

Linguistics is concerned with the systematic and subconscious constraints governing language. The core areas of linguistics are the following:

  • Phonetics – the articulation and perception of speech sounds
  • Phonology – the contrasts and patterns of speech sounds
  • Morphology – the formation and structure of words
  • Syntax – the formation and structure of phrases and clauses
  • Semantics – the meanings of linguistic expressions
  • Pragmatics – the meanings of linguistic expressions in context

Linguistics at the IEAS

In the linguistics department of the IEAS, we look into these and further areas of linguistics (corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, etc.) with respect to present-day English and its varieties around the world. We also investigate other Germanic and non-Germanic languages, especially in externally funded research. We are particularly interested in syntax and semantics and the syntax-semantics interface: the relations among linguistic expressions' forms and meanings.

We are involved in and provide classes for the following study programs:

  • Lehramt Englisch (teaching degree in English)
  • BA English Studies
  • BA and MA Empirische Sprachwissenschaft (empirical linguistics)
  • MA Linguistics
Lehramt Englisch (teaching degree in English), administered by the Academy for Educational Research and Teacher Training (Akademie für Bildungsforschung und Lehrkräftebildung, ABL), is a German/English-taught seven/nine-semester program. It provides students with the didactic and expert knowledge necessary for teaching at:
  • Grundschulen (primary schools, L1)
  • Haupt- and Realschulen (secondary schools, L2)
  • Gymnasien (grammar schools, L3)
  • Förderschulen (special-needs schools, L5)

The BA English Studies is an English/German-taught six-semester program that can be studied as a major or a minor subject at the IEAS. The program is divided into four focus areas: English linguistics; English literary studies; cultural, intellectual, and social history (Kultur-, Ideen- und Sozialgeschichte; KIS); and new Anglophone literatures and cultures (Neue englischsprachige Literaturen und Kulturen, NELK).

The MA Empirische Sprachwissenschaft is a German-taught two/four-semester program in empirical linguistics that offers eight focus areas. The length of this MA depends on the length of your BA.

The program provides participants with the in-depth expertise and methods necessary to explore and analyze natural human languages with empirical procedures. It covers both modern and ancient human languages and aims to a) describe aspects that are specific to these languages as well as general aspects of language and speech, b) classify these aspects on the basis of typology and historical genetics, and c) explain them. Research into these languages covers their usage as “spoken languages” in everyday communication processes on the one hand, but on the other all written forms of natural languages used, thereby taking into account and focusing particularly on the literary traditions linked to these languages, their socio-historical conditions of use or other phenomena linked to their usage.

The MA Linguistics is an English-taught four-semester program in theoretical linguistics focusing on syntax, semantics, phonology, psycho- and neurolinguistics, language variation and change, and constraint-based grammar.

The program qualifies participants to make empirically based and theoretically founded statements about different aspects of language and to investigate them further in independent research.
