For Students
Propose Your Own GREP Project
Through the Goethe Research Experience Program (GREP), advanced international Bachelor's and Master's students from partner universities can propose a 2–6 month research project, provided it aligns with a Goethe University faculty and a supervisor is available.
This is an excellent opportunity to:
- Explore a research topic you are passionate about
- Develop project design and research skills
- Contribute new insights to your field
Key Information
Faculty: all 16 faculties
Supervisor: Assigned upon approval
Duration: 2–6 months
Intake Availability: Spring, Summer, Fall (subject to supervisor availability)
Requirements
Students who wish to propose their own research project can follow these steps:
1. Prepare a 1–2 page project outline, including:
- Research question or hypothesis you aim to address
- Methodology overview, including experimental setups, analytical models, simulations, or fieldwork (if applicable)
- Key reference literature that supports your idea and provides a scientific foundation
2. Download and complete the Project Proposal Form
3. Submit your Project Proposal to GREP
3. Proposal review and supervisor matching
- GREP will review your submission and contact suitable supervisors
- Only projects with a confirmed supervisor can be nominated for a GREP fellowship
Tip: Students are encouraged to contact GREP or the faculty early to discuss feasibility and potential supervisors.

Requirements
A potential supervisor must agree to mentor your proposed project before it can be nominated for a GREP fellowship.
GREP assists in matching students with suitable supervisors, but you may also reach out individually if you identify a potential match in your field.
Matching Process
GREP reviews your submitted project proposal and, if needed, helps identify suitable supervisors.
Guidelines for Contacting Supervisors
When reaching out to a potential supervisor:
1. Introduce yourself professionally (name, home university, study program).
2. State your purpose (interest in a GREP research project)
- Your CV
- Transcript of records (with grading scale if possible)
- Project outline (1–2 pages)
- Mention how your interests align with the supervisor's research
- Ask if they are open to supervising your GREP project
