Prof. Dr. Susanne Scholz

   

Susanne Scholz is Professor of English Literature and Culture at the University of Frankfurt/Main. She has held teaching posts at the Universities of Frankfurt, Siegen and Paderborn. Her main research interests and publications are in the field of early modern, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century English literature, gender studies, medical humanities, visual culture studies and literary anthropology. She has recently completed a research project on visual practices at the court of Elizabeth I. and is currently working on a project on faces and typification in English literature at the turn of the 20th century. Her major book publications are: Body Narratives: Writing the Nation and Fashioning the Subject in Early Modern England. London: Macmillan 2000, Objekte und Erzählungen. Subjektivität und kultureller Dinggebrauch im England des frühen 18. Jahrhunderts. Königstein: Helmer 2004, and Phantasmatic Knowledge. Visions of the Human and the Scientific Gaze in English Literature, 1880-1930. Heidelberg: Winter 2013. 

Completed research projects:

  • Medium Mensch – Medialisierungen des Humanen. Konstitutionen des Menschseins in der spätviktorianischen Literatur (DFG-funded 2007-2009)
  • Vision and the Making of Early Modern Courtly Space (DFG-funded 2010-2012)
  • Typisierungen des Humanen. Visuelle Anthropologie und ihre spät- und neo-viktorianische Kritik (DFG-funded 2016-2019)

Current research project:

  • Shakespearean Embarrassments and Serial Victorians: The Pragmatics and Politics of Actualization
