More info about SediTools

SEDITOOLS is a collection of six simple applications
to convert or calculate some things as used in sedimentology.

Geological Time Scale

1) A Geological Time Scale - as published in Harland et al. 1982, Harland et al. 1989, as well as Berggren et al. 1995, Gradstein et al. 1995 (complete references included). You can change between time scaled and non-time scaled view.

Stoke's sinking time calculation

2) A Stoke's sinking time auto-calculation - you can vary water temperature, specific gravity, settling hight, grain size and the settling time.

Centrifuge sinking time calculation

3) A centrifuge sinking time auto-calculation - you can vary centrifuge dimensions, rounds per minute, water temperature, specific gravity, and grain size.

2Theta - d-value (Angstroem) conversion

4) A 2Theta - d-value (Angstroem) - auto-conversion - by a given wavelength. Kalpha, Kalpha1, Kalpha2, and Kbeta values of Mo, Cu, Co, Fe, and Cr already exist. You can vary angle and d-value, the converter changes the counterpart automatically.

Time-Temperature-Index calculation

5) A (simple) Time-Temperature-Index calculation (Lopatin method) - as published by Waples, D.W. (1980) Time and Temperature in Petroleum Formation: Application of Lopatin's method to petroleum exploration. A.A.P.G., Bull., 64: 916-926, Tulsa. You can give in up to 24 strata units (you need name, thickness and base age), at that time the TTI is to calculate, a (constant) geothermal gradient, the surface temperature und a R-factor (2 is standard). The TTI's of each unit and the resulted burial time and temperature, the entire TTI, and the empirically calculated random vitrinite reflectance (Rr%) is automatically shown. The maximum TTI is 750.000.

LogGenerator

6) A simple Log plot generator - conctruct one-page sedimentologic rock logs on the base of tab-formated TEXT spreadsheets loaded or pasted into SediTools.

The LogGenerators data structure:

____________________________________________________________________

  • string left hand (TAB)
  • thickness (TAB)
  • bulge value (TAB)
  • pattern/color value (*) (TAB)
  • string right hand
    ____________________________________________________________________

You can edit each entry. There are some variations to change the profile log graph (inversion of stack or scale, bulge degree, smoothed layers, log width, a.o.). You can print, save or copy your results as vector based PICTs in normal or high res quality.

* The pattern/color value consists of a five number code: First three numbers are used for color (0 to 176), the last two numbers for pattern (1-38). For example:

  • 0 - no color, no pattern
  • 17 - no color, pattern 17
  • 100 - color 1, no pattern
  • 2211 - color 22, pattern 11
  • 12312 - color 123, pattern 12

You can use the Log Editor to change your color and pattern.

LogGenerator is also available as a stand-alone application.

SediTools is freeware, it can be acquired and used by everywere. The distribution is not restricted, except for making profit. The rights remains by the author. Use it at your own risk.

System requirements (2001):

Minimal PowerMac PPC version:

Power Macintosh with min. 1 MB free RAM, colored monitor (min. 256 colors, 14 inch), about 0.4 MB on hard disk, System 7.1 or 7.5.

Minimal System (68K version):

Macintosh or Powerbook with 68030 processor, better 68040, 16 colors, 14 inch monitor, 1.5 MB free RAM,about 0.6 MB on harddisk, System 7.x.

A PowerMac is recommended for best performance!

The software is written in Visual Interactive Programming (VIP) BASIC, a development tool of Mainstay. The PowerPC version is translated to ANSI-C and is compiled with CodeWarrior 10.
