THE CALLIOPEAN SOCIETY E. V. for the Advancement of the English and American Studies at Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main

The Calliopean Society...

  • ... is a registered association and operates directly for charitable purposes.
  • ... financially supports special events at the IEAS (e.g., graduation ceremonies, 
             guest lectures, performances by the Chaincourt Theatre Company, etc.).
  • ... awards annual cash prizes for exceptional achievements in master's theses and 
             final examinations.
  • ... promotes teaching at the IEAS through the acquisition of multimedia materials
             and by providing printing cost subsidies for publications.
  • ... maintains a lasting connection between the IEAS and its alumni—and among the
             alumni themselves.

[Calliope, Καλλιόπη, 'the Fair-voiced,' is the eldest and wisest of the nine Muses. She presides over eloquence and epic poetry, her name deriving from the harmonious and melodious quality of her voice. The ivy leaf is an emblem of the glory of learning.]

Die Calliopean Society (gegründet 2004) ist der Verein zur Förderung der England- und Amerikastudien an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main.

Der Vorstand der Calliopean Society setzt sich zusammen aus:

Silvia Anastasijevic (Schatzmeisterin)
Linda Heß (Schriftführerin)

Calliopean Prize

wird einmal jährlich für die beste Master, Magister- und Staatsexamensarbeit am IEAS vergeben.
Nominiert werden die Arbeiten von dem/der betreuenden Professor*in.
Die auswählende Jury setzt sich aus je einer/m Vertreter*in einer jeden IEAS-Abteilung zusammen.
Die Bewertungskriterien: 
  • Handelt es sich um einen innovativen Forschungsbeitrag?
  • Ist die Arbeit flüssig, sprachlich angemessen geschrieben?
  • Baut sie auf einer reflektierten, methodischen, terminologischen Basis auf?

Die Preisverleihung findet alljährlich auf der End-of-Term-Party im Juli statt.

Die Calliopean Society pflegt enge Kooperationen mit:

Frei nach dem Motto: "Er/Sie hat bei uns studiert – und es ist trotzdem was aus ihm/ihr geworden!"

In unregelmäßigen Abständen lädt der Verein ehemalige Studierende und Absolventen des Instituts ein, vor aktuell Studierenden von ihrem Werdegang zu berichten. Wir hoffen, so eine weitere Perspektive für die Zukunft als Geisteswissenschaftler*innen zu zeigen.

Die Calliopean Society sieht sich als Schnittstelle zwischen universitärerer Theorie und beruflicher Praxis und will den Wahlspruch der Universität, "Hier wird Wissen Wirklichkeit" auch tatsächlich umsetzen: Know-How, Insider-Tipps, Expertise, first-hand information, kurz: wertvolle Informationen eines Praktikers und damit "wirkliches Wissen" gilt es zu vermitteln!
