Overview
Course content and focus areas |
The ‘Archaeology and History of the Roman Provinces’ MA-program encompasses the Roman provinces in general, with a particular focus on the Western provinces of the Roman Empire. The provinces are examined from their establishment until the fall of the Western Roman Empire (c. 250 BC – AD 500). In focusing on this theme the program examines the entire legacy that comes down to us from these centuries, i.e. material remains, culture, and religion, as well as information concerning the surrounding landscape. The aim of the program is to make students aware of the manifold existing sources by presenting a coherent and well-structured sample. The material evidence is documented to a large extent through archaeological excavations, and is augmented by every new excavation, as well as every available form of textual evidence. The latter includes the literary corpus of ancient authors, stone or bronze inscriptions, and the cursive inscriptions which survive on various materials (papyri, writing tablets, painted inscriptions, graffiti, etc). From this basis the program will seek to trace past lives as comprehensively as possible from the ancient perspective, within the above mentioned geographical areas and time period. |
