Overview

Course content and focus areas  The target of the study programme is to provide students with a further education in chemistry. The Master’s programme not only offers the option of focusing on a specialist area but students will also acquire the necessary skills for this and they will learn to think independently and act responsibly. Graduates should be able to assess the characters of chemical compounds and to apply the necessary methods for solving challenging chemical problems. Methods, procedures, research and industrial fields of activity are constantly changing, so it is the aim of the chemistry programme to teach students the necessary knowledge in a way that enables them to familiarise themselves quickly with new developments, to be introduced to new areas and to make independent contributions to further developments of research and technology in their specialised area once they have finished their programme.

The Master’s examination is the second professional chemistry degree. During the four semesters of the Master’s programme, which follow on from the six semesters of the Bachelor’s programme, students will acquire the profound, specialised knowledge necessary for the transition to professional practice. The broad spectrum of the academic programme will ensure that students acquire the skills necessary for demanding fields of activity in industry, economy and administration.
Special focus areas at the Universität Frankfurt:
Research carried out by Universität Frankfurt’s chemistry department extends to Life Sciences and Material Sciences and focuses on
  • Structural research,
  • Molecular mechanisms,
  • Membrane proteomics, and
  • New matter: from molecule to matter.
The Master’s programme mirrors these focus areas so that students can decide whether or not they want to choose a broad range of focus areas in their study programme, or if they want to focus on one particular focus area: biomolecular chemistry, synthesis and catalysis, structure, dynamics and function, or analytics.
These focus areas correspond to the areas of research in which university teachers are strong, and present attractive, forward-looking fields of research. The courses offered in the Master’s programme are no longer divided strictly into classical subjects and institutes but rather organised thematically and often taught in an interdisciplinary fashion.

Conditions of admission

Admission requirements Admission for the Master’s programme takes place by enrolling at the Goethe Universität Frankfurt.
  • The main requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from a German higher education institution, or an academic degree recognised to be equivalent.
  • As some of the lectures may be held in English, the programme requires English language skills.
  • International applicants must submit a language certificate to prove that they have enough German Language Skills. This is in accordance with the university’s regulations on the German language exam for university entry, the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH), for applicants with foreign university entrance qualifications in their respectively valid version, unless they are exempted from the German language examination under the DSH regulations.
Upon request of the student, the examination board decides on admission to the Master’s programme as well as on exceptions in relation to para. 2. For applicants who have no Bachelor’s degree from a German higher education institution, the examination board can decide to impose conditions (such as a test to check a student’s knowledge of theory and practical skills).

Provisional admission Provisional admission is possible on the basis of a current transcript of records; at least 80% of the credit points in the B.A. must have been obtained. Provisional admission is valid until the end of the first semester of the master’s program. The bachelor’s degree must thus be handed in by March 31 (winter intake) or September 30 (summer intake) the latest.
Mode of admission Admission is not restricted. Students will be directly admitted if the admission requirements are met in full.

  • Applicants who have graduated from a chemistry programme at another German higher education institution have to submit the university degree certificate.
  • Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree from other natural sciences disciplines have to submit the university degree certificate as well as a "Diploma Supplement" and a "Transcript of Records" or an equivalent document listing the courses completed during the study programme.
  • Applicants who have graduated from an international higher education institution have to submit the university degree certificate as well as a "Diploma Supplement" and a "Transcript of Records" or an equivalent document listing the courses completed during the study programme.
  • Applicants who do not have a German university entrance qualification or have not completed their degree at a German higher education institution must also prove that they have sufficient German language skills.
All applicants who are not enrolled at the Goethe-Universität have to submit their university entrance qualification (A-Levels etc.).
If the degree certificate is not yet available, an application and possibly a provisional admission is possible if the following documents are submitted:
  • A transcript of records or an equivalent document listing the performances to date with individual marks and an interim grade.
