Mobbing beinhaltet, dass jemand am Arbeitsplatz von KollegInnen, Vorgesetzten oder Untergebenen schikaniert, belästigt, drangsaliert, beleidigt, ausgegrenzt oder beispielsweise mit kränkenden Arbeitsaufgaben bedacht wird und der oder die Mobbingbetroffene unterlegen ist.

Wenn man etwas als Mobbing bezeichnen möchte, dann muss dies häufig und wiederholt auftreten (z.B. mindestens einmal pro Woche) und sich über einen längeren Zeitraum erstrecken (mindestens ein halbes Jahr). Mobbing kann stresstheoretisch als Extremform sozialer Stressoren eingeordnet werden.

In verschiedenen Studien in Deutschland und in der Schweiz wurden Beginn, Dauer, geschlechtsspezifische Aspekte, Position der Mobber sowie Vorkommen von Mobbing in unterschiedlichen Branchen untersucht. Ursachen von Mobbing wurden in der Organisation, im sozialen System (Arbeitsgruppe), im Täter und im Opfer gefunden. Außerdem wurden die betrieblichen und gesundheitlichen Folgen und die Bewältigung von Mobbing untersucht.
